How can the New England Patriots address their top needs this offseason? With over $100 million in cap space, the Patriots have a prime opportunity to pursue top-tier free agent receivers.
While Tee Higgins has already been franchise-tagged and is likely off the table, there are still potential No. 1 receivers for the Patriots to target in free agency.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recently listed the Patriots as “potential suitors” for Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent Chris Godwin.
“Although Godwin typically played as Tampa’s No. 2 receiver alongside Mike Evans, he’s one of the few wideouts available with true No. 1 receiver potential,” Knox noted. “Godwin could be a key target for the Patriots, who are looking to give second-year quarterback Drake Maye a reliable go-to option. Jacksonville may also be interested, especially after parting ways with Christian Kirk.”
Godwin, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver with four 1,000-yard seasons in his eight-year NFL career, would instantly become the Patriots’ top receiving threat, easily surpassing the 674 yards Hunter Henry led the team with in 2024.
However, luring Godwin away from the Buccaneers may be challenging, as they’re the only team he’s ever played for and have made playoff appearances in the last five seasons.
Still, as coach Mike Vrabel has mentioned, the Patriots may need to “overpay” to secure their top targets. If New England makes an irresistible offer, Godwin could be headed to a new team.
