Robert plays a crucial role in the Black Cats’ squad, featuring in 14 out of their first 16 Championship matches this season. In the previous campaign, the 26-year-old contributed five goals and seven assists from 42 appearances.

Sunderland has officially announced that Roberts has agreed to a contract extension, binding him to the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2026. Originally joining in the January 2022 transfer window from Premier League side Manchester City, Roberts expressed his delight at extending his stay with the club.

Teammate Gooch responded positively on social media, expressing joy at Roberts committing his future to the team. Roberts, in turn, shared his excitement about the extension, emphasizing his enjoyment of the past two years at the Stadium of Light and his eagerness for more success with the club.

Initially arriving on loan, Roberts made his move permanent after Sunderland’s promotion success. Although the team finished sixth in their first Championship campaign back, they fell short of promotion in the play-off semi-finals against Luton Town.

Sunderland, aiming for another top-six finish, has been on an upward trajectory after a challenging period. Currently sitting sixth in the Championship following a recent 3-1 win over Birmingham City, the team looks to continue their resurgence with an upcoming match against Plymouth Argyle on November 25.

Roberts’ importance to Sunderland is highlighted by his ability to play across the front three, providing versatility to the team. His experience in the Championship and adaptability to different tactical setups make him a valuable asset. While his current season performance hasn’t matched the previous one, there is confidence that Roberts will soon contribute goals and assists, making his contract extension a positive development for the club.
