Alan Shearer, an iconic figure at Newcastle United, suggests that it wouldn’t be surprising if his former club sought a goalkeeper during the upcoming January transfer window. The Magpies currently face the absence of their first-choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope, who sustained a significant shoulder injury in a recent match against Manchester United.

Pope’s crucial role in the team’s recent success is undeniable, but his injury, expected to keep him out for at least four months, casts doubt on his availability for Euro 2024. This absence has adversely affected the team’s on-field performance, resulting in losses to Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, conceding seven goals in the process.

Newcastle United call-up 17-year-old goalkeeper in Martin Dubravka's 'absence'

Reports indicate that Martin Dubravka, the second-choice goalkeeper, is dealing with an injury, potentially paving the way for third-choice goalkeeper Loris Karius in a crucial Champions League clash with AC Milan. Both Karius and Dubravka have five games left in 2023 to stake their claim for a regular starting spot before the January transfer window opens.

Shearer emphasizes the need for the club to seize this opportunity to reinforce the goalkeeping department. He notes that given Pope’s injury and Dubravka’s situation, it wouldn’t be surprising if Newcastle actively pursued a replacement in the coming weeks to avoid being in a vulnerable position should Pope face further setbacks.

Among the potential options, former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is heavily linked to a move to St James’ Park. De Gea, a free agent since the previous season, has been touted as a viable choice due to his impressive track record, immediate availability, and the absence of a transfer fee, aligning with Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Another candidate could be Aaron Ramsdale, Pope’s England teammate and an Arsenal star, who, despite being part of the PFA Team of the Season, has faced challenges securing regular playing time due to the arrival of David Raya.
