A well-known head coach was reportedly rejected when the Philadelphia Eagles showed interest in him.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk claims that the Eagles “expressed interest” in Bill Belichick. The lengthy former head coach of the New England Patriots, though, showed no interest in Philadelphia.

Florio stated on Thursday, January 18, “According to a league source, Belichick is thought to be done with ‘big-market media,’ making him more inclined to go to a place like Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia.” Regarding the Cowboys and Eagles, there is a notion in certain league circles that after both teams showed interest in Belichick, the franchises chose to remain with their present head coaches after Belichick declined their advances.

The head coaches of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles were both seen as being on the hot seat a few days ago. The Eagles seem to be leaning towards bringing Nick Sirianni back for a fourth season, while the Cowboys have now reaffirmed their commitment to Mike McCarthy as their head coach through 2024.

“As of right now, it appears that Sirianni will remain,” Florio posted on Sunday, January 21. If so, he will simply stay; the Eagles won’t make an announcement about it.

The job status of the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Nick Sirianni, is currently uncertain or under scrutiny.

The recent developments suggest that Bill Belichick seems inclined towards the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons. This has raised questions about whether the Philadelphia Eagles had initially planned to retain Nick Sirianni as their head coach or if they would have considered parting ways with him had Belichick expressed interest in the Eagles job.

Despite Sirianni guiding the team to a Super Bowl appearance just the previous season, the Eagles had a disappointing end to the current season. After starting strongly with a 10-1 record, they lost six of their final seven games and were eliminated in the wild card round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 32-9 defeat.

Following the playoff loss, there were immediate concerns about Sirianni’s job security. However, Sirianni, when asked about it on January 16, expressed that he was focused on the players and not worrying about his own situation.

While it seems likely that the Eagles will stick with Sirianni, the speculation about potentially replacing him with Belichick arises due to the latter’s impressive coaching career, marked by six Super Bowl victories. It is noted that one factor in Belichick’s lack of interest in the Eagles may be the autonomy he wouldn’t have in football operations, a level of control he had in New England and seems to be offered by Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

The article suggests that if Blank is willing to grant Belichick similar power, it may have played a role in Belichick’s preference for the Atlanta position. The author imagines the possibilities of what Belichick could achieve with the Eagles’ Super Bowl-ready roster, but it appears that Belichick’s focus is on the opportunity with the Falcons.
