The San Francisco 49ers have terminated defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ contract just three days following their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement on Wednesday, citing the need for a better scheme fit for the defensive talent within the team. Shanahan expressed the difficulty of the decision but emphasized the organizational necessity for change.

Wilks was brought in by Shanahan after the departure of DeMeco Ryans, who became the head coach of the Houston Texans. Shanahan aimed to maintain the successful defensive system but encountered challenges as Wilks attempted to integrate his strategies with existing schemes.

The regular season saw mixed results, prompting adjustments like Wilks moving from the coaching booth to the field. However, issues persisted in the playoffs, notably with deficiencies in run defense and struggles against pivotal plays by opposing quarterbacks.

Shanahan acknowledged the disconnect between the secondary, Wilks’ area of expertise, and the front seven, leading to defensive inconsistencies.

The search for Wilks’ replacement will include internal and external candidates, with Shanahan open to considering a new system but leaning towards continuity given the team’s familiarity with the current setup.

Additionally, the Niners will experience several coaching changes within their staff, with multiple coaches accepting positions elsewhere in the league.
