It wouldn’t be surprising if the St. Louis Cardinals make additional moves soon. During this offseason, St. Louis has significantly enhanced its team following a disappointing 2023 season, particularly focusing on strengthening the pitching roster, a priority they’ve successfully addressed.

Although the Cardinals have already made notable improvements for the upcoming 2024 season, there are still opportunities to further enhance the team’s prospects for the future. One potential addition could be former Milwaukee Brewers standout Brandon Woodruff, who remains a free agent option. Despite being sidelined for the entirety of the 2024 season, Woodruff’s potential return to form in 2025 presents an enticing opportunity for any team. At 31 years old, he could offer elite-level performance at a reasonable cost, likely securing a two-year contract. St. Louis stands as a plausible destination for him, having been linked to his acquisition previously.

Woodruff’s credentials, including his two-time All-Star status and impressive career 3.10 ERA over seven seasons in the majors, make him an attractive prospect for the Cardinals. While St. Louis has made strides in bolstering its starting rotation for the upcoming season, it’s prudent to consider future needs as well. Teaming up a healthy Woodruff with Sonny Gray could lay a solid foundation for the Cardinals heading into 2025.

The Cardinals’ pitching depth issues were a significant factor in their struggles during the 2023 season, highlighting the importance of addressing this area. With Woodruff still available, there’s an opportunity for St. Louis to strengthen its roster further and potentially mitigate such challenges.
