The Green Bay Packers could potentially terminate Aaron Rodgers’ contract in 2024, but they still face financial challenges. They currently have more than $15 million in dead money for the year, even before considering any further roster adjustments. Releasing David Bakhtiari would add approximately $19 million to that sum. Although there are alternative strategies the Packers could pursue, recent NFL developments may have simplified their situation significantly.

The Green Bay Packers Likely To Get Massive Salary Cap Break From The NFL

As per Freddie Boston of Lombardi Ave, several forecasts, including Spotrac’s current estimates, project the 2024 NFL salary cap to be $242.5 million. However, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk suggests it could be notably higher.

Quoting Florio, “Another source, known for accuracy in these matters, indicates it will be closer to $250 million than $243 million.”

An increase of $4-7 million would greatly benefit the Packers, particularly if they were planning based on a $243 million cap. This would reduce the necessity for extensive roster adjustments to meet the cap and provide more flexibility in free agency.

Such a scenario would simplify efforts to retain key players like Aaron Jones and Preston Smith, potentially eliminating the need for contract restructuring. As the final salary cap figures for 2024 approach, a number closer to $250 million would ease the offseason workload for Brian Gutekunst and Russ Ball, aiding the Packers in navigating various salary cap challenges.

The Packers Could Be Active In Free Agency/Trade Deals This Off-Season

General Manager Brian Gutekunst made this statement earlier this off-season:

During the previous season, the Packers demonstrated a genuine interest in acquiring star running back Jonathan Taylor, even considering a substantial contract commitment to him. It’s probable that the Packers will be open to restructuring contracts or making other financial adjustments this offseason if the opportunity arises to acquire the right player.

Securing an additional $7 million in cap space could prove crucial in pursuing such opportunities.
