The Detroit Lions have initiated their offseason activities with significant signings. Initially, they secured Mathieu Betts, the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player, on a one-year deal. This signing is intriguing, given the Lions’ need for a stronger pass rush, although Betts’ transition to the NFL remains uncertain. Later in the week, the Lions re-signed kicker Michael Badgley, who concluded the previous season as the team’s starter.

Now, delving into the specifics of each player’s contract sheds light on their future with the Lions.

Mathieu Betts:
– Contract Duration: 1 year
– Contract Value: $795,000 with no guaranteed money
– Breakdown:
– Base salary: $795,000
– No signing bonus
– Cap hit: $795,000
– Cap savings if cut: $795,000
Betts accepted the veteran minimum for the 2024 season. Notably, he declined more lucrative offers with guaranteed money to join the Lions due to the favorable team culture and what he perceives as a clearer path to securing a spot on the 53-man roster. While it’s a gamble on Betts’ part, he’s expressing confidence in his abilities.

From the Lions’ perspective, there’s virtually no financial risk involved. If Betts demonstrates his CFL productivity level (18 sacks in 18 games), this deal could be a significant steal for Detroit. Even if he serves as a rotational player, contributes on special teams, or provides reliable depth, the Lions would receive good value for their investment. Moreover, if he fails to make the team, there are no financial or salary cap obligations.

Michael Badgley of Summit NJ is a kicker with the Detroit Lions

Michael Badgley:

– Signing bonus: $167,500
– Cap hit: $1,152,500

Badgley receives an immediate signing bonus of $167,500 and is guaranteed to earn at least $425,000 including the guaranteed salary. However, the Lions haven’t fully committed to Badgley as their kicker based on this contract, as they can recover over 63% of his cap hit if they choose to release him.
