Joe Flacco’s anticipated return to Cleveland didn’t come to fruition, but he’s landed a favorable opportunity just westward. According to reports from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Mike Garafolo on Wednesday, Flacco is set to sign a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, potentially earning up to $8.7 million, with $4.5 million guaranteed.

After a year of waiting for genuine interest from NFL teams, Flacco remained unsigned into the regular season until Cleveland reached out in desperation, eventually leading to a successful stint with the Browns. His impressive performance included setting a franchise record by throwing for over 300 yards in four consecutive games and securing a playoff spot for the team.

Having initially resigned himself to the possibility of not receiving any calls from NFL teams, Flacco’s success in Cleveland has earned him another opportunity, this time with the Colts. The Colts sought a seasoned backup to support their promising young quarterback Anthony Richardson, following Gardner Minshew’s departure for Las Vegas.

Despite occasional interceptions, Flacco showcased his ability to compete at a high level during his six starts (five regular season, one postseason) with the Browns, earning him the Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Recognizing the importance of a reliable backup quarterback, especially in a league where numerous quarterbacks saw starting roles in the previous season, the Colts were keen to secure Flacco’s services.

While the Colts hope to never rely on Flacco during the regular season, the unpredictability of NFL quarterback situations underscores the necessity of a dependable backup. With Flacco on board, Indianapolis is confident they’ve strengthened their contingency plan. Flacco, a former Super Bowl MVP with the Ravens, brings a wealth of experience, having amassed impressive career statistics of 43,936 yards passing, 245 touchdowns, and 155 interceptions.
