The San Francisco 49ers, led by general manager John Lynch, have consistently pursued bold moves to strengthen weak areas in recent seasons. Whether acquiring star players like Christian McCaffrey to enhance the offense or bolstering their formidable front-seven with talents like Chase Young, Lynch’s approach is marked by aggressiveness.

Following their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Lynch and the 49ers may consider taking a chance on another former first-round pick whom they believe could thrive with a change of scenery.

If the Cleveland Browns decide to trade cornerback Greg Newsome, The 33rd Team suggests that the San Francisco 49ers would be an ideal destination. According to Dan Pizzula, writing for The 33rd Team, the 49ers could benefit from adding another outside cornerback alongside Charvarius Ward. Their current options, Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas, were deemed average during the 2023 season as the team rotated through various players in that position. San Francisco could strategically manage contracts while capitalizing on Brock Purdy’s economical rookie deal, which is set to expire soon.

How Greg Newsome Could Fit San Francisco 49ers

After initially facing challenges in finding his rhythm, Greg Newsome experienced one of the most successful seasons of his career while playing in Jim Schwartz’s defensive system in 2023.

Greg Newsome II

Drafted by the Browns as the 26th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Newsome showcased his ability as a top-tier cornerback in 2023, limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 76.4 passer rating when they targeted him, as per Pro Football Focus.

In his first three seasons, Newsome has amassed a total of 128 tackles, along with one sack and two interceptions.

With the 49ers aiming to strengthen their secondary and revive the physicality that characterized their defense under former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, Newsome emerges as a potential trade target worth monitoring.
