According to a source familiar with the matter, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reached a $25 million, one-year deal with pitcher Jordan Montgomery, with a vesting option for 2025. The agreement, which is pending a successful physical, was disclosed to The Associated Press on Tuesday night under the condition of anonymity.
Under the terms of the contract, if Montgomery makes a minimum of 10 starts in the upcoming season, the option would be guaranteed at $20 million, and he would also gain the right to opt out. The option price would increase to $22.5 million with 18 starts and to $25 million with 23 starts – a threshold he has met in the past three seasons.
Montgomery, who pitched for Texas in the World Series last year against Arizona, adds depth to the rotation of the defending National League champions shortly before the start of the regular season. Once ready to play, he is expected to fill the No. 3 or No. 4 spot alongside Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Eduardo RodrÃguez, who signed a $80 million, four-year contract with the Diamondbacks earlier in the offseason.
The deal between Montgomery and the D-backs was initially reported by ESPN. The 31-year-old left-hander entered free agency for the first time as a World Series winner, having played a significant role in Texas’ championship victory after being traded at the deadline for the second consecutive year.
