Following the trade of Mac Jones to Jacksonville by the New England Patriots, the ex-Alabama quarterback expressed his desire to “get back on track” with the Jaguars.
Jones, who began as a starter from his debut NFL game with the Patriots in 2021, lost his position with six games remaining in the 2023 season. Despite having one season left on his guaranteed contract, New England decided to part ways with him.
When asked about Jones potentially being a risky acquisition for the Jaguars, Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson also used a train metaphor. He stated that he didn’t want Jones to feel pressured to perform, acknowledging the ups and downs Jones had faced in his career so far. Pederson emphasized the importance of rebuilding Jones’ confidence and allowing him to compete without feeling the burden of being the main player.
In Jacksonville, Jones won’t be contending for the starting position. The Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence from Clemson as the No. 1 pick in the same draft where Jones was picked 15th. Jones will serve as a backup alongside C.J. Beathard.
Pederson highlighted the need for three capable quarterbacks, citing historical evidence. However, he emphasized that their primary goal is to keep Lawrence healthy, as his well-being is crucial for the team’s success.
Jones started all 42 games he played for the Patriots but spent the final six games on the bench as New England’s performance declined in the 2023 season.
In his rookie NFL season, Jones had impressive stats, earning him second place in the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award voting and a spot in the Pro Bowl. However, his performance slightly declined in his second and third seasons.
During Jones’ rookie season, Josh McDaniels was the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. In his second season, Jones worked with former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as his playcaller, as the Patriots operated without a named offensive coordinator. In 2023, Bill O’Brien, the former head coach of the Houston Texans and offensive coordinator at Alabama, took over the offensive coordinator role for the Patriots.
