Someone needed to step into Nick Saban’s shoes as the highest-paid coach in college football, and Kirby Smart seems to be the perfect fit. Georgia revamped Smart’s contract, bumping his salary up to $13 million annually for the next decade, edging him ahead of Clemson’s Dabo Swinney by a few million, likely setting a benchmark for Swinney’s future negotiations.

Moreover, Smart stands to earn even more through substantial yearly bonuses. His salary sees a $2.5 million increase, which appears to be a steal for the university considering his exceptional track record. Over his eight seasons, Smart boasts an outstanding overall record of 94-16, including a remarkable 56-9 record in conference games. With the exception of his debut season’s 8-5 record and a shortened 8-2 season due to COVID, Smart has consistently achieved at least 11 wins each year. Additionally, he has secured two national titles thus far and has an astonishing 42-2 record over the past three seasons.

Despite losing key players to the NFL, Smart has adeptly replenished his team and is now regarded as one of the frontrunners for the national championship in 2024. Furthermore, Smart’s off-field conduct is impeccable, with no hint of controversy. He’s recognized as a good-natured individual with a supportive family, who is living out his dream job at his alma mater.

At just 48 years old, Smart is well on his way to becoming an undisputed first-ballot inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. However, he shows no signs of stepping away from coaching anytime soon, especially with his salary set to continue growing.
