The Commanders secured LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels as the second overall pick in last month’s draft, a selection that sparked significant speculation beforehand. There were talks about other potential picks like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy or UNC’s Drake Maye, but Commanders’ GM Adam Peters ultimately favored Daniels.

Peters had a high opinion of McCarthy due to his skills, but Daniels impressed him immensely after he got the chance to review his performance. Daniels’ ability to read the game, deliver precise throws, and his agility stood out, making him Peters’ top choice. Daniels’ dedication to improvement, as seen in his extra workouts and commitment to his team, further solidified Peters’ decision.

Feedback from figures like Niners’ coach Kyle Shanahan and receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who knew Daniels well, reinforced Peters’ belief in his choice. Despite potential offers, Peters never wavered in his decision to select Daniels, indicating his strong conviction.

While Daniels might not immediately start for Washington, with Marcus Mariota available as an interim option, Peters is confident in Daniels’ eventual role as the team’s quarterback. He views the selection of Daniels as a stroke of luck for Washington and is excited about the future.
