Longtime Buffalo Bills announcer John Murphy is retiring from his role prior to the start of the 2024 season. The team made the announcement online, praising Murphy as a representative of both Bills football and the city of Buffalo.

Murphy served as the team’s radio broadcaster for 35 years, with 16 years as a color analyst and 19 years as the play-by-play broadcaster. He took a hiatus from broadcasting last season after suffering a stroke in January. In an earlier interview with 7 News Senior Reporter Eileen Buckley, Murphy discussed his ongoing recovery, expressing optimism about his progress.

In a recent interview with WBEN, Murphy expressed readiness to transition into the next phase of his life, stating that the timing felt right to step down. He also indicated a willingness to contribute to game day broadcasts in a different capacity.

 

The Buffalo Bills community is sharing fond memories and best wishes for Murphy, acknowledging his decades-long dedication to the team and the region. Bills owner Terry Pegula highlighted Murphy’s passion and contributions, expressing hope for his continued involvement with the organization. Legendary Bills wide receiver Steve Tasker recalled Murphy’s impact on his career and his lasting presence in Buffalo broadcasting.

Beyond his role as the “Voice of the Bills,” Murphy is recognized as a member of the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame and received the Dick Gallagher Legacy Award from the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2022 for his community involvement and promotion of local amateur sports during his broadcasting tenure.
