COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michigan will pay tribute to a legendary Ohio State athlete.
World Athletics, formerly known as the IAAF, has announced plans to commemorate Jesse Owens’ extraordinary performance at the 1935 Big Ten Championship, often referred to as his “Day of Days.”
During the championship held on May 25, 1935, at Michigan’s Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Owens set four world records within a span of 45 minutes. He clocked a 9.4-second time in the 100-meter dash, leaped 8.13 meters in the long jump, and won the 220-yard (20.3) and 220-yard low hurdles (22.6) events, all with record-breaking times.
His family, along with representatives from Michigan and Ohio State’s track and field teams, will reveal a World Athletics Heritage Plaque outside Ferry Field. This plaque will replace the existing one that has stood at the venue’s southeast corner since 1985.
