Yankees Wish To Renew A Lucrative Deal
The New York Yankees face some major decisions this offseason, with one of the most pressing being how much they’re willing to offer Juan Soto to stay, as the star outfielder is expected to draw lucrative offers from multiple teams.
The team also has to figure out how to address key positions, including first base, after opting to decline veteran Anthony Rizzo’s $17 million option.
However, one of the Yankees’ most urgent needs will be strengthening their bullpen. The team has been connected to top closer options, such as Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers, but with key relievers like Tommy Kahnle, Tim Hill, and Lou Trivino likely departing for free agency, SNY’s Phillip Martinez has suggested that the Yankees should consider bringing back Clay Holmes, despite his inconsistent 2024 season.
You might be surprised, and Yankees fans might not like this, but re-signing Holmes is the smart move,” Martinez wrote. “At the right price, Holmes setting up (Luke) Weaver just makes sense and could help solidify a bullpen that stands to lose several important arms.”
Holmes had a mixed 2024 season. For much of the year, he was one of the top relievers in baseball, earning his second career All-Star selection and serving as a dependable closer.
However, from mid-June to mid-September, his ERA ballooned to 5.46, and he blew 10 saves during that stretch. After being shifted to a middle-relief role, he showed signs of improvement, but struggled in the postseason, allowing three earned runs with a 10.13 ERA against the Cleveland Guardians. While his free-agent stock took a hit, Holmes could still return to the Yankees if he’s willing to accept a short-term deal. “The Yankees should only bring Holmes back if he’s open to a one-year contract as a middle reliever,” Martinez added.
“Holmes has proven his value, but only in the right role. Give him a clean inning in the seventh or eighth, and he’ll thrive, as we saw once he was moved away from the closer’s role.”
