Stefanski Names His Starting QB Post-Bye Week, The Cleveland Browns still have the rest of the season ahead, but they’ll be doing it without Deshaun Watson. This opens the door for the team to evaluate their quarterback depth and assess the future of the position.
That said, it’s safe to say the Browns’ quarterback of the future may not even be on the roster yet. For now, it looks like Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson will likely battle it out for the backup QB role.
It looks like the veteran is currently leading the charge in that battle. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, head coach Kevin Stefanski has chosen Jameis Winston as the starting quarterback for the Browns’ upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Saints following their bye week.
Winston likely won’t have much room for error moving forward, and even though he’s been named the starter for Sunday, his role isn’t secure beyond that.
Earlier this season, Winston was demoted to third-string quarterback, with Dorian Thompson-Robinson moving ahead of him on the depth chart. But with both Watson and Thompson-Robinson sidelined by injuries, Winston stepped up when called upon, even leading the Browns to their second win of the season in his first start with the team.
However, Winston’s performance against the Los Angeles Chargers was lackluster, effectively ending any remaining playoff hopes and raising questions about his long-term viability as the starter.
Still, the team believes Winston gives them the best chance to compete, at least for the immediate future.
