Lewis Hamilton snubbed as McLaren boss names his best three drivers on the Formula 1 grid

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella surprisingly snubbed Sir Lewis Hamilton when he named the three best drivers currently in Formula One.

Ever since he made his debut in 2007, Hamilton has always been considered one of, if not the best driver on the grid, having won a record seven world titles and 103 grand prix in that time.

Though he did not add to that tally in 2023, it was still an impressive year for the British sporting legend who finished third in the championship, the highest of the non-Red Bull drivers.

Max Verstappen is largely considered the best racer right now, having won the last three titles in a row, but many would still have Hamilton up there with the Dutchman and it is thought that if the pair were to race in equal machinery it would be a close affair.

However, Stella doesn’t seem to share that believe, instead championing McLaren’s Lando Norris and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso as the best drivers beside Verstappen.

‘Lando is already one of the best drivers on the grid,’ the Italian told DAZN.

‘He is very fast, very good in the race, with tire management… When I think about Lando, I think that if the team and I gave him a good car, he would be able to fight for the championship.

‘When we talk about being the most complete, I definitely think of Fernando Alonso. He basically has no weaknesses.

‘I think this makes him unique. He is not the best in many things, but he is very strong in all of them.

‘Lando, I think his development as a driver will make him so complete. He reminds me a little of Fernando.

‘My top 3 drivers with the same cars would be Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso.’

While both Alonso and Norris are certainly among the best on the grid, the former a two-time champion of course, it is still strange to see Hamilton excluded, though it should be said that Stella does have ties to the other two.

As well as being Norris’ current boss, Stella served as Alonso’s race engineer during his five years with the Scuderia, before following the Spaniard to McLaren in 2015.
