May 20, 2024

The composition of Formula 1 drivers for the 2024 season differs from the lineup at the start of the 2023 season, but remains unchanged from the roster that concluded the 2023 season across all 10 teams.

Throughout the span from the beginning of the 2023 season to the present, the sole driver alteration occurred during the season at AlphaTauri, where Daniel Ricciardo replaced Nyck de Vries alongside Yuki Tsunoda due to de Vries’ performance issues. Ricciardo temporarily missed races due to a wrist injury sustained in a crash, during which Liam Lawson stepped in, but Ricciardo retained his position for the 2024 season.

In the 75-year history of Formula 1, there has never been an instance where every team retained the exact same driver lineup from one year to the next until now. Consequently, there are no rookies included in the lineup for the upcoming season.

Formula 1 sees first-time scenario that will probably never happen again

Formula 1 driver roster for 2024 is the same as for 2023.

Here’s a glimpse at the driver lineup at the conclusion of the 2023 season, which will carry over into the 2024 season:

Red Bull: Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez
Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton, George Russell
Ferrari: Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz Jr.
McLaren: Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri
Aston Martin: Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll
Alpine: Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon
Williams: Alexander Albon, Logan Sargeant
RB: Yuki Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo
Sauber: Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu
Haas: Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen

While it was anticipated that last year’s transfer market would be rather uneventful, given the abundance of unfounded rumors (like Perez’s supposed retirement during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend), it seems improbable that such a lack of changes will recur anytime soon.

Even though there were genuine possibilities of shifts last year that never materialized, the prospect of all 10 teams retaining the same driver pairings over any offseason is remote.
With more than half of the 2024 grid yet to secure contracts to remain with their respective teams in 2025, this upcoming transfer market seems poised to be truly eventful following a season marked by remarkable continuity. In fact, it’s already underway, with Lewis Hamilton’s surprising announcement of his move to Ferrari as the replacement for Carlos Sainz Jr.
