Carson Wentz seems to attract situations where he’s backing up Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. Initially sidelined by injury while Nick Foles led the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in 2017, Wentz later spent a season behind Matthew Stafford with the L.A. Rams. However, the Rams opted for Jimmy Garoppolo for the 2024 season, once again leaving Wentz without a team. Yet, his fate changed when reports surfaced of his contract signing with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night.

Once more, Wentz finds himself in the shadow of a Super Bowl champion, but this move could hold promise for his career. In Kansas City, he won’t immediately face the pressure to secure wins, especially with the NFL’s expanded 17-game schedule making quarterback injuries increasingly common. There’s a good chance Wentz will see playing time for the Chiefs in 2024, especially considering the team’s recent success and aspirations for a three-peat Super Bowl win.

While Patrick Mahomes has been remarkably durable, missing just one game in the last three seasons, the possibility remains that Wentz could step into the starting role at any moment. This was evident in the final game of the 2023 season when Wentz performed admirably for the Rams against the 49ers while starting in place of rested players.

Now, with Wentz settling in with the Chiefs, and Garoppolo finding his place elsewhere, it appears that all parties are where they belong, at least for the time being. As for compensatory picks, the Rams shouldn’t expect one for Wentz’s signing, as they haven’t had any former players offsetting the deals for Kamren Curl and Colby Parkinson by signing with other teams yet.
