The Los Angeles Rams, holding the 19th pick in the 2024 NFL draft, face varied predictions from pundits and experts. Suggestions range from selecting an interior defensive lineman as Aaron Donald’s successor to opting for a wide receiver, safety, or cornerback.

However, an intriguing possibility emerges with some forecasts indicating the Rams might target their future franchise quarterback. The latest mock draft from The 33rd Team suggests the Rams could select Oregon’s Bo Nix as their next quarterback, with Ari Meirov projecting Nix to be chosen 19th overall.

Meirov emphasizes several factors influencing this potential decision. Firstly, Matthew Stafford, at 36, is approaching the latter stages of his career, with no guaranteed money remaining on his contract after the current season. Secondly, coach Sean McVay’s commitment to a long-term future with the Rams suggests the need for securing the next quarterback. Additionally, the Rams’ previous attempt to trade for Sam Howell highlights their interest in securing a successor.

While selecting Nix would surprise some, signaling a future quarterback transition, Stafford’s age and injury history raise questions about the timing of such a move. Despite his elite performance when healthy, concerns linger over his durability.

Yet, the urgency for a quarterback remains debatable. Although this year’s quarterback class offers unique talent, the Rams have pressing needs elsewhere. Improving the defensive secondary and addressing trench positions emerge as more immediate priorities.

Ultimately, the decision to select a quarterback in the first round is not imperative for the Rams, with other positional needs taking precedence. Defensive secondary players or trench specialists would better serve the team’s immediate goals if they maintain their 19th pick.
