Pittsburgh Pirates’ seasoned left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman received a two-game suspension from MLB for his actions leading to an ejection during Monday’s game against the Mets, as announced by the league on Thursday. Jon Heyman of the New York Post broke the news first.
Chapman’s incident unfolded in the eighth inning when Jeff McNeil reached first base after a dropped third strike by Pirates’ catcher Henry Davis. Following a walk to DJ Stewart, Chapman became visibly frustrated with the calls made by home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso.
His frustration peaked when Harrison Bader hit a two-run double down the left-field line off his final pitch of the night. Shortly after the play, Chapman engaged in a verbal exchange with Moscoso, resulting in his ejection. The Pirates ultimately lost the game 6-3. Manager Shelton commented, “He evidently said something that the umpire did not like. Because of that, he got ejected.” Chapman has the option to appeal the suspension and will also face a fine. In the current season, he has appeared in nine games, recording a 0-1 record with a 4.76 ERA. A seven-time All-Star, Chapman has tallied 11 strikeouts and issued six walks in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
