The Chicago Cubs suffered a heartbreaking loss in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Miami Marlins.
With the Cubs holding a narrow 2-1 lead as they entered the top of the ninth inning at Wrigley Field, manager Craig Counsell decided to bring in Adbert Alzolay to finish the game. Unfortunately, Alzolay failed to secure the win, giving up a two-run homer to Bryan De La Cruz. This turned the Cubs’ one-run advantage into a one-run deficit, ultimately leading to their defeat.
Following the game, Counsell, visibly frustrated, talked to the media about Alzolay’s difficulties in the closer role this season and hinted that a change might be necessary.

Counsell pointed out Alzolay’s struggle with keeping the ball in the park, noting that he has already given up four home runs in just 10 innings this season. All four of his blown saves have been a result of home runs, which are particularly damaging in crucial moments and often stem from poorly executed pitches.
“We need Adbert to get outs, regardless of when he’s pitching,” Counsell emphasized. “We need him to be effective out of the bullpen, and I believe he can be. We just need outs.”
Counsell hinted at using Alzolay in less critical, non-save situations. He feels Alzolay isn’t currently reliable in the ninth inning, and the Cubs can’t afford to keep dropping games they could win.
With Alzolay having more blown saves (four) than saves (three) this season, Counsell believes he has given him ample opportunities. It’s time to give someone else, perhaps Hector Neris with his closing experience, a chance in the ninth inning. This would also provide Alzolay an opportunity to regain his confidence in a less pressure-filled role.
