Donovan Edwards, the running back for Michigan, is set to play a crucial role in the team’s quest to defend their national championship in 2024. Despite serving as a backup to Blake Corum during his initial three seasons at Ann Arbor, Edwards now has the opportunity to step into a starting position for the upcoming season. Corum, the primary running back for Michigan, and Edwards’ roommate, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, have both declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Edwards made his intentions clear by sharing a photo on social media with the caption “Michigan fans, I’m back,” on the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft. Additionally, edge rusher Josaiah Stewart, who contributed significantly with 5.5 sacks and 38 tackles in the 2023 season, also plans to return to Michigan. Stewart played a pivotal role in securing Michigan’s Rose Bowl victory, recording a crucial sack on the final play of overtime against Jalen Milroe of Alabama. On the flip side, pass rushers Braiden McGregor and Jaylen Harrell have declared for the draft.

Despite the departure of Corum, Michigan boasts a strong group of returning running backs, including short-yardage specialist Kalel Mullings. The team’s depth is further bolstered by incoming recruits Jordan Marshall and Micah Ka’apana, who could potentially play significant roles in the 2024 season. Notably, Edwards showcased his talent in the College Football Playoff national championship, scoring two touchdowns with his first two carries – a 46-yard run down the left sideline and a 41-yard run down the right sideline, contributing to Michigan’s victory over Washington. In the championship game, he totaled 104 yards on six carries. Before this standout performance, Edwards had accumulated 113 carries for 393 yards (averaging 3.5 yards per carry) and three touchdowns, along with 30 receptions for 249 yards. In the 2022 season, Edwards had an impressive 991 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
