Drama unfolded within the Denver Broncos’ special teams on Monday when it was initially reported that free-agent kicker Wil Lutz would be joining the Jacksonville Jaguars on a three-year contract. However, at the last minute, Lutz had a change of heart.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lutz decided to return to Denver and signed a two-year deal instead. His agent, John Perla, confirmed the decision, stating that there was originally an agreement with Jacksonville but Lutz reconsidered and felt that Denver was the better fit for him.
Lutz, who was acquired from New Orleans last August, had a rocky start with the Broncos, missing both a field goal and an extra point in their Week 1 loss to the Raiders. However, head coach Sean Payton decided to stick with him, and Lutz proved himself by finishing the season with impressive stats, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for November.
This decision makes Lutz the fourth in-house free agent to re-sign with the Broncos, joining safety P.J. Locke, offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, and wide receiver Michael Bandy.
