As the Padres stepped onto the field Friday night in Phoenix to face the Arizona Diamondbacks, news started circulating about a significant trade San Diego was finalizing. According to multiple sources, the team was set to acquire Luis Arraez, a two-time batting champion, from the Miami Marlins in exchange for four minor league players, including Dillon Head, a 19-year-old outfielder ranked as the sixth-best prospect in the Padres’ system. Whether Arraez would join the Padres’ roster or play in Saturday night’s game against Arizona remained uncertain. However, one thing was clear: the team was experiencing a positive trend, as observed by manager Mike Shildt.

Luis Arráez is the best hitter alive

After enduring a five-game losing streak that pushed them to their lowest point of the season, four games below a .500 win-loss ratio, San Diego managed to turn things around with three consecutive victories, improving their record to 17-18. During this winning streak, the Padres scored a total of 19 runs and showcased strong offensive performances, including seven extra-base hits in Friday night’s game, which featured three home runs.

Additionally, the starting pitchers, who struggled during the losing streak, rebounded impressively, allowing only three runs in 17 2/3 innings across the recent games. Dylan Cease’s standout performance on Friday night, with eight strikeouts, three hits, and just one run conceded in 6 2/3 innings, exemplified this resurgence. Cease commented on the pitching staff’s collective effort to deliver quality starts after the disappointing stretch of games where they consistently gave up five runs each.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, Michael King, with a record of 2-3 and an ERA of 5.00, aimed to recover from consecutive losses marked by vulnerability to home runs. King reflected on the challenge of facing Arizona’s formidable lineup and emphasized the importance of minimizing the opponent’s running game and preventing big innings.

On the Diamondbacks’ side, they relied on right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, with a record of 1-1 and an ERA of 4.63, to provide a strong start after several short outings from their starting pitchers.

Pfaadt’s recent performance, including a career-high 11 strikeouts in his last game against Seattle, showed promise despite not securing the win. He had previously performed well against the Padres in two starts last year. Despite the Diamondbacks’ struggles, there was optimism about the potential return of closer Paul Sewald and outfielder Alek Thomas from injuries, potentially bolstering the team as they prepared for an upcoming road trip to Cincinnati.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo expressed hope that both players would be available early in the Cincinnati series, pending their recovery progress and confirmation from medical evaluations.
